### Re: Calculation of Earth Mass using Mountain

This has been done - by Nevile Maskelyne, Astronomer Royal of Scotland in 1774. He and his team measured the tiny deflection in a plumb line due to the gravity of Schiehallion, a regularly shaped mountain above Loch Tummel in the Scottish Highlands. They determined the deflection by pointing a telescope up the plumb line and seeing that it was pointing at slightly the wrong stars.

I read in class 10... i have question
How Schiehallion experiment can calculate the weight of the earth coz Newton’s universal gravitational constant wasn’t known at that particular time.
Can Enyone show me the Mathematical Formula....
It's great to see someone showing interest and curiosity in the field of physics! The Schiehallion experiment was an experiment conducted in the 18th century to determine the mass of the Earth. It involved measuring the deflection of a plumb line caused by the gravitational pull of a nearby mountain, Schiehallion.
