What is Geophysical Survey

Post by Resource »

What is geophysical survey? Here is a simple version of a geophysical survey: coin-searching with a metal detector. “Coin” is the target/purpose of the survey, and “metal detector” is the geophysical method/tool used in the survey. A geophysical survey has a purpose – searching, locating, detecting or delineating something; it also involves one or more apparatus – the geophysical tools.

Why is a geophysical survey performed? A geophysical survey is performed for searching something underground, underwater or inside a wall, etc. It’s usually cost-effective and/or non-destructive. It’s convenient and fast -- generally airborne, performed on the ground surface or in the water, although sometimes it involves drilling as in borehole logging.

The term “geophysical survey” is widely used in the oil and gas exploration and mining industry. In oil and gas exploration, “geophysical survey” is often exchangeable with “seismic survey”, the main geophysical technique used in the industry, although other methods such as the gravity method are also used. In the mining industry, the geophysical methods commonly used include gravity, magnetic, seismic, electromagnetic (EM), magnetotelluric (MT), direct current electrical resistivity, induced polarization(IP) and self potential (SP), etc. Geophysical surveys are also used in environmental, engineering, forensic and archaeological and other investigations. In these kinds of shallow depth investigations, ground penetrating radar (GPR), one of relatively new geophysical tools, has become more and more popular.

Geophysical survey is the systematic collection of geophysical data for spatial studies. Detection and analysis of the geophysical signals forms the core of Geophysical signal processing. The magnetic and gravitational fields emanating from the Earth's interior hold essential information concerning seismic activities and the internal structure. Hence, detection and analysis of the electric and Magnetic fields is very crucial. As the Electromagnetic and gravitational waves are multi-dimensional signals, all the 1-D transformation techniques can be extended for the analysis of these signals as well. Hence this article also discusses multi-dimensional signal processing techniques.

Geophysical surveys are the methods used in archaeology to produce a detail image or map of an area. There are many different methodologies, but the most successful surveys involve a solid research design that is well plannedkirksrenovations.org
