MASW urgent Help

Post by joshvalencic »

We are looking to do an MASW survey soon, to determine soil compaction.

I was always under the impression that MASW was Multi Channel Analysis of Surface Waves, however some internet sources have said 'Multi Channel Analysis of Shear Waves'

As I'm a geophys grad I understand the differences between shear waves and surface waves (rayleigh and love), and their mechanisms are quite different. Is it possible that there are two kinds of MASW surveys?

For example, one source says 'A surface wave method is often used to map shear wave velocity variation of soil with depth'

This does not make sense from what I understand

Any help appreciated - Josh

For reference, this textbook (applied Geophysics) calls it Shear Wave Analysis

Is there some link between wave dispersion and s waves that I'm not connecting?

MASW first measures seismic surface waves generated from various types of seismic sources—such as sledge hammer—analyzes the propagation velocities of those surface waves, and then finally deduces shear-wave velocity (Vs) variations below the surveyed area that is most responsible for the analyzed propagation velocity pattern of surface waves.
