What Gpr to look for...

Post by NIKOLAS »

Hi guys, I work in an electricity company, and we wave thoughts in buying a GPR for utilities. What tech. spec. should we look for? Scans/sec? data analyzer program? etc. The depth our utility exists is up to 4 meters underground. We are not well educated for this matter and we need some help.

The critical component of the hardware you need to consider is the frequency of the antenna. For locating underground utilities, the frequency is normally between 200MHz to 500MHz. The best locating depth range is around 1 to 2 meters although you can get deeper than that in sandy soils. Are you just looking for electrical cables? A cable locator might be a better choice.

Don't worry too much about softwares for now, I would try to find what kind of GPR brands are available in your area. Many companies have their own software to analyze data, but there are also third party softwares you can use. First you have to decide which GPR brand to get, then find suitable software for it.

Check the GPR manufacture list:

Thank you very much for the info. We have cable locators and they do a good job. But we also have plenty of empty pvc cross pipes in streets and avenues that we know that they are somewhere "here", but where exactly...we don't. So we do trials here and there and if we are lucky.... we find them. That's why we are looking for a Gpr. Thanks for the manufacturers list. I saw two interesting types.

If you have the budget, you might want to consider to buy two antennas, such as 250MHz and 500Mhz antennas from Mala or Sensor & Software. Or you can buy a dual frequency system such as the one from GSSI. It gives a little bit of flexibility in balancing between penetration depth and resolution.

The Mala and the Gssi are the two types that may respond to our needs. It seems that the dual system from the Gssi is the best considering the cost. Thanks
