Google Says It Will Not Build Custom A.I. for Oil and Gas Extraction

Post by Newsman »

After a year of weathering criticism from tech workers, politicians, and activists over its oil industry contracts, Google has stated that it will not create new custom A.I. or machine learning algorithms that would help the oil and gas industry enhance its ability to extract fossil fuels.

“We will not … build custom A.I./ML algorithms to facilitate upstream extraction in the oil and gas industry,” a Google spokesperson said in a statement provided to OneZero. The declaration comes in response to a new Greenpeace report that details 14 separate contracts between three of the biggest tech companies — Google, Amazon, and Microsoft — and major oil firms.

Over the last two years, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, and Amazon Web Services have inked deals with firms like Exxon, Chevron, and Total to use A.I. and automation to accelerate fossil fuel exploration and extraction, linking the last generation of the world’s richest, most powerful companies with the newest. Microsoft, Google, and Amazon have built web portals to entice oil and gas clients, and each company has set up divisions aimed at winning business from the oil industry. With a surfeit of disorganized, backlogged data, tapering production rates, and deep financial reserves, major oil corporations are attractive clients to cloud service providers.

So artificial intelligence (AI) is a real thing for oil and gas exploration and extraction now. I don't know how exactly it works for seismic data, but I am sure GPR data interpretation can use some AI helps. Sometimes it's so hard to extract information from GPR data, even with so many data processing techniques.

It has been for a few years, however the use of AI is not just in exploration; production is part of this *the "digital oilfield" as is refining and so on.

We're a little away from processing being pure machine learning, but in an 80/20 rule kind of way not all that far. If you have all the tests and parameters used, along with what was selected, that's a big training dataset.

This is a very carefully worded statement.

It says nothing about data storage, large scale compute or day-to-day cloud operations for the business as a whole. The oil industry has huge data storage and processing needs, and the cloud - Google, AWS, Azure - is very much part of that. The industry is, I think, also not afraid of abandoning cloud platforms and going back to their own servers, or funding a specialist provider such as DUG to expand their operations.

Very interesting...
I checked some articles, saying some estimate that the oil and gas investment for AI will reach $3 billion by 2022. If I am an undergraduate student in geophysics and have difficulty finding job in the oil and gas industry upon graduation, maybe I will seek to get a master or Ph.D. degree in computer science, majoring AI or data science. Geophysics and AI/data science looks like a great combination. I actually got some licenses in data science for handling big data after a few weeks of preparation, it's not that hard. AI algorithms should be much harder. So I would go for master in data science, Ph.D. in AI. :)

Geophysics programs for oil and gas exploration in colleges/universities should start having some courses in AI/data science, or encourage some collaborations with the computer science department if they already have the courses.

You guys don't think geophysics is hard enough? Let's keep geophysicists and computer geeks separated.

We are already half way there to be computer geeks. They are hackers of the internet world and we are hackers of the underground world. ;)

Actually, we both hack the underground world, only that "underground" has different meanings for us and computer geeks.
